The Way
of the Warrior
A study of presence, faith and the people who carry a living tradition forward.
The series
The warrior is often reduced to spectacle. I wanted to look past the armour and ask what strength feels like from within.
Begun in 2014, this body of work follows Sikh Nihang and Akali warriors through Hola Mohalla, Punjab’s villages and Gurudwaras. The photographs move between portrait, ritual and fleeting observation.
My visual language carries the influence of manga, anime and the samurai, but the work remains rooted in real encounters. It is less interested in aggression than in discipline, empathy, inheritance and presence.
Where the exploration began
First, it was a poem.
The main exploration of what it means to be a warrior began when I wrote The Way of the Warrior. It asks whether empathy, restraint and the battle within can be forms of strength.
The poem then became a spoken-word performance and an animated digital layer, showcased at events around the world. The written poem is the conceptual beginning; a separate static warrior artwork is its physical counterpart and AR trigger, opening into the film.
